Brendan Sullivan, A Colorful Colony of Coral, 2022
A modernism-influenced, graphic interpretation of a Floridian coral reef. The species represented are all native to our waters: Branching Fire, Sea Fans, Sea Rods, Lettuce, Brain, and Pillar. Working with a tall, skinny canvas is always a fun challenge, because you want to utilize the height as a strength in your design. I approached this project wanting to highlight Florida’s natural environment, but of course our state is rather flat with few naturally tall structures. That’s when I came upon the idea of a layered coral colony, and the interplay you find between its different shapes, colors, and textures. 621 Virginia Dr.

I have broken down the main areas of interest found in the vibrant Lake Ivanhoe Village and created an abstract pattern to represent each area. I’ve used simple bold shapes paired with a vibrant color palette to illustrate the exciting energy and variety that the area has to offer. Location: 531 Virginia Dr.
Nichole Spates, Frond Memories, 2022
Frond Memories seeks to juxtapose the natural with the man­ made, to play with and reimagine a simple frond. Using items in my home as a starting point, I photographed a palm frond wall hanging, a metal fern frond on a stand, a Japanese door curtain, and the shadow cast by a second metal frond. Mirroring the independent spirit of Ivanhoe Village, I chose the colors - blue, green, brown and gold that echo rich colors of the natural environment of Ivanhoe Village. The tiles exist in a realm between the real and the abstract. They are reminiscent of natural forms but are portrayed with what I hope to be a bold, energetic spirit, much like the spirit of the Village. (2021) Location: 701 Virginia Drive

A concept of my pattern theories. This time I used a pineapple stencil as the first proposal to create the sunset over Lake Ivanhoe. On top I have the large pineapple to reinforce the pineapple image theme. A stencil will be used to paint the pineapple repeated throughout the image. With stencils used, there are some organic qualities found and no 2 stencil images are exactly alike. Location: 310 E New Hampshire St.

Although Ivanhoe Village is an active urban setting for many people, its natural environment is home to many native Floridian animals as well. If you walk around the lakes in Ivanhoe or even paddleboard/kayak across the water, you may be familiar with the small reptiles that call Ivanhoe Village’s lakes their home. But if you aren’t keen on the aquatic wildlife of Central Florida, the “Beneath the surface—freshwater turtles” art panel will give you a glimpse at the more cryptic inhabitants of Ivanhoe Village. The freshwater turtles of Ivanhoe Village (including the red-bellied cooter and red-eared slider) deserve our attention because they help keep the lakes healthy by controlling aquatic vegetation. With this art panel, I hope to bring awareness to the natural environment of Ivanhoe Village. Location: 616 Virginia Dr.
